Sea Monsters

Oceans and seas have always been a source of legends and tales since the beginning of time. Folklore is full of stories that talk about the existence of another realm in the dark depths of these bodies of water. Almost every civilization’s culture has myths about creatures like sea serpents, sea monsters, mermaids and other such beings that reside in a world of their own on the ocean floor.

.

However, the question is that do these sea serpents and monsters actually exist or are they just an offshoot of man’s vivid imagination. Old drawings and paintings have depicted sailors and ships being attacked by these fearsome creatures. Some of them resembled dragons while others looked like serpents and octopuses.

.

Though modern day man has a number of technological advancements toSea Monster's lair help his quest for these sea monsters, the age-old legends remain. However, most of these legends have some origin and basis in facts somewhere. For example, a giant octopus called Lusca was often seen in the Bahamas in the 19th century. In 1896, people found this giant octopus dead on the coast of Florida.

.

People near the Pacific Coast often report seeing a giant sea serpent called Caddy or “Cadborosaurus willse” near the coast. This legend is about two hundred years old and people have reported sightings of this creature more than three hundred times.

.

Although ancient drawings may have exaggerated the structure of these creatures, the truth is that there are creatures that are undiscovered and exist in the depth of these oceans and seas beyond the reach of man. Some of the oceans are so deep, that even our modern technology cannot penetrate these dark depths. It is here that a stray fisherman or ship happens to sight these creatures that perhaps come for some sunlight or merely to know what is happening in the world above. We may try to explain everything with the help of science…however, sometimes legends and stories are just above the realms of logic!

One Response to “Sea Monsters”

  • Gus:

Interesting comparison between dragons and sea monsters. I don’t think that they are both the same thing. Obviously they are close relatives because they are both reptilian in their nature, but I think that dragons should be able to fly. Either way, I guess, I would not want to meet either of them in my travels!
